It has become a “family tradition”, so I have been told to be selected to light the advent candle at our church during advent.  The older three have already had that privilege which is reserved for fourth grade students.  Geoffrey is a fourth grader this year and so he was able to carry on this great tradition.  When the older three lit the candles, we were still at the down town campus.  This is the first of the Ayers family to light a candle at the south campus.

Geoffrey is one of my more reticent children and does not like to be in front of large groups of people.  When the notice first came, he was not excited.  The older three all told him he had to do it, all of them had and it was really fun.  He was not sure, but we signed him up anyway.

Sundays are not always easy for Geoffrey as Saturdays can sometimes be late and he is not an early morning person.  He also does not like to dress up and would prefer to be in sweats and a T-shirt.  So when I reminded him last night that he would need to be up early and wear nice clothes, he appeared to blow me off.  When Courtney went in to wake him up this morning, he got up with out several reminders and came out with dress pants and a nice shirt on – I think he was excited, but he wouldn’t admit to it.

We got to church early to practice.  I have helped with the advent candle lighting for many years, but never at the south campus.  I had to ask many questions and wouldn’t you know it, I was also being observed by others who were going to light next week!  Geoffrey listened to all the instructions, even though it appeared he was ignoring everything that was going on around him!  We prayed with the worship team and Pastor John personally thanked him for being the candle lighter today.  Geoffrey was not sure what to say or do.  He did a great job and later when he was asked if he had fun, he replied with an enthusiastic, “YES”.
